Modularize Your Construction Design - Part II

Why would I want to modularize my design?

Modules being erected

By modularizing your design, significant savings can be achieved in both overall cost and in the construction schedule. Modularization is a standardized method, which is faster and leaves less room for error than traditional construction methods.

Modular precast concrete construction can be 80% faster than traditional construction methods, enabling simultaneous construction activities to occur, and entire buildings to be erected in a matter of hours. Significantly fewer materials are used, and there is less waste produced due to the engineered factory process and LEAN manufacturing principles. Your end
result is a long lasting, sustainable, earthquake and blast
resistant housing facility.

Modularize Your Construction Design - Part I

What is “modularizing” a design?

Modularizing a design consists of taking a new or existing design and dividing it into multiple parts (modules) that will each be precast independently of each other and used in multiple functions. By breaking the design up into precast building blocks, the overall number of construction components is reduced, creating a more manageable prefabricated structure. With less pieces and production line techniques, significant cost and schedule savings are achieved.

How is it done?

At RW, our preconstruction professionals will assess your design plans and work with the projects architect to address structural integrity, constructability, space efficiency, aesthetic qualities and MEP connections. Custom modules are then designed to fit your projects’ individual design needs.

Nearly every housing design can be modularized without changing the existing intent of the design. For the most savings and advantages, we recommend beginning the design process with the modular goal in mind; however, modularization can also be achieved once a design is complete. Hotels, dormitories, villas, senior living facilities, correctional facilities, and military barracks are housing applications especially suited for modular construction since they are repetitive, large scale projects.
